Activists report general strike in Syria towns
Several Syrian towns observed calls for a general strike on Saturday, a day after protests in which at least nine people were killed by security forces, activists said. Most streets in the central city of Homs appeared deserted due to a large-scale security crackdown, the opposition group Local Coordination Committees of Syria said. Abbas: UN statehood bid is not a unilateral act
The Palestinian Authority decided to ask the UN to recognize a Palestinian state in September because of the failure of the peace talks, and this is not a unilateral act, PA President Mahmoud Abbas declared on Saturday. Egypt military leader: We will respect all previously signed agreements
The head of Egypt's ruling military council Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi said on Saturday that Egypt intends to keep all previously signed agreements and will keep working toward achieving a stable and sustainable peace in the Middle East.
