'Israeli diplomats return to Cairo after embassy attack'

Four Israeli diplomats returned to Cairo after the evacuation of embassy staff earlier this month, Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram's English-language website reported Monday. Israeli officials and their families were flown back to Israel when Egyptian protesters breached a wall surrounding the embassy and broke into an apartment housing mission archives. The consul for state affairs and Ambassador Yitzhak Levanon's deputy was the only diplomat who reportedly remained in Cairo following the violent demonstration at the embassy and Giza police headquarters where 3 people died and at least 1,000 were injured. The Al-Ahram report said that among the diplomats that flew back to the Egyptian capital were "the consul, an adviser, the head of security, and his deputy." The report also said that it was unclear if the diplomats were returning to the embassy in Giza or to an another undisclosed location. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said that Israel is committed to keeping the peace treaty with both countries, which he said is in the interests of both countries.(21,00)
