Senate votes to tighten sanctions on Iran

The Senate endorsed stringent new sanctions on Iran's energy and shipping sectors in a fresh attempt to hobble the Islamic Republic's economy and hamper its nuclear ambitions. Ignoring White House opposition spelled out just hours before the vote, the Senate voted 94-0 on Friday for a package of punitive measures that would end sales and transactions with various Iranian domestic industries.           Israel and the United States immediately downplayed the Palestinians' new upgraded status at the UN, saying it changed nothing in actual practice and even made peace with Israel even more remote. PM Netanyahu:UN bid will not change anything on the ground

‏         The UN General Assembly is set to implicitly recognize a sovereign state of Palestine on Thursday despite threats by the United States and Israel to punish the Palestinian Authority by withholding funds for the West Bank government. A Palestinian resolution that would change the Palestinian Authority's UN observer status from "entity" to "non-member state," like the Vatican, is expected to pass easily in the 193-nation UN General Assembly.‏‏ Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu attacked...
