Iran's supreme leader, Khamenei: Nuclear talks will lead nowhere

Iran's top leader said Monday that he doubts talks aimed at sealing a final deal between Tehran and Western powers over the Islamic Republic's disputed nuclear program will succeed, a day before the negotiations begin. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he had accepted the talks at the behest of some Iranian leaders, but blamed what he saw as their likely failure on the United States, saying Washington is using the issue as an excuse to pressure the country. "The nuclear issue is an excuse," Khamenei said in a speech broadcast... [Lire la suite]

At least five killed in tourist bus explosion on Sinai border

At least five people were killed and dozens wounded in an explosion Sunday on a tourist bus in Egypt's Sinai near the Israeli border, Egyptian military and police said. Four of the victims were South Korean tourists, and the fifth was an Egyptian bus driver, Egyptian security officials said. The officials said the source of the explosion was not clear, but they believe it was either a car bomb or a roadside bomb that was detonated by remote control. Fatah-Hamas reconciliation seems nowhere in sight

The long-running dispute between Fatah and Hamas looks unlikely to be resolved soon, with the two sides unable to even agree on whether talks about reconciliation were actually taking place. Fatah says its delegation that went to the Gaza Strip recently did not travel there to move the reconciliation process ahead. Rather, it said, talks with Hamas officials were limited to issues regarding the Fatah presence in Gaza and never touched on the all-important matter of ending the bifurcation between the two rival factions that is impeding... Israel moves closer to deploying laser shield against rockets

Israel's national weapons manufacturer is showcasing its new Iron Beam laser shield against rocket fire, and says deployment of the "Star Wars" style technology is closer to becoming a reality. Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said development of the system was advanced enough for the company to be comfortable with publicizing it at this week's Singapore Airshow, which is Asia's largest aerospace and defense exhibition. The laser technology behind the missile shield is not that far removed from fiction. "It's exactly like what you see... [Lire la suite]

Martin Schulz's harmful ignorance

In the Middle East, water makes wars and peace. Water can heal and chill, water can also inflame a situation. The European Parliament president learned it from personal experience on Wednesday. "For want of a nail," says the proverb. In Schulz's case, it's for want of a big mistake. Schulz arrived at the Knesset with good intentions and harmful ignorance. His claim that the Palestinians are being deprived of water is embarrassing. An allegory of Israel's difficulty with the Europeans. It's not the criticism but the mixture of facts... [Lire la suite]

Netanyahu said stalling on Israel-Turkey reconciliation deal

The report cited a source familiar with the talks as saying Netanyahu was afraid of the reaction from the right over the high compensation for families of those killed in fighting when the IDF boarded a Turkish Gaza-bound boat in 2010. The draft includes a payment of more than 20 million dollars to the families of the nine Turkish nationals who died on the Mavi Marmara on May 31, 2010. Negotiators from Israel and Turkey presented the draft 10 days ago, the radio said, with a recommendation from National Security Council Advisor Yossi... [Lire la suite]
