Pentagon: Iranian warplanes fired on U.S. drone over Persian Gulf/Haaretz

Iranian warplanes fired multiple rounds at an unmanned, unarmed U.S. surveillance aircraft in international airspace over the Persian Gulf last week, but the craft was undamaged and returned safely to its base, Pentagon spokesman George Little said on Thursday. President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta were both advised early on about the unprecedented incident, which occurred at about 4:50 A.M. Eastern Time on November 1. Iran was later warned through diplomatic channels the... [Lire la suite]

Israel marginal in US elections

When it came to casting their ballots, US Jews were unaffected by Mitt Romney's claims that President Barack Obama "threw Israel under the bus" or with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Iran rhetoric. The current tally has Obama with 60,097,107 votes and Romney with 57,412,778 The New York Times' exit polls show that 52% of American men voted for Romney while 55% of... [Lire la suite]

Ex-JAG: Marmara trial is a show

Israeli defense officials were relatively unfazed by a trial that kicked off in Turkey Tuesday against four former senior IDF officers including former IDF chief Gabi Ashkenazi and former Navy commander Eliezer Marom for their part in the killing of nine people during a raid on the Mavi Marmara in May 2010. The Prosecution demands nine consecutive life sentences for the officers in, but it appears unlikely that any sentence could be carried out. The four are being tried in... [Lire la suite]

In Middle East, relief not euphoria at Obama win

A tweet from one of Saudi Arabia's most influential clerics summed up the Middle East's response to Barack Obama's re-election: "Obama isn't good," tweeted Salman al-Oudah, "But he is the lesser evil." After four years during which he largely kept Washington on the sidelines while the Arab Spring transformed the Middle East, Obama's re-election was met more with relief than joy in a region that welcomed him in 2008 and still has bitter memories of his Republican predecessor... Pushing reset in Netanyahu-Obama ties/HERB KEINON

When US President Barack Obama wakes up Thursday morning and starts thinking about his second term and the legacy he realistically hopes to leave, it is doubtful securing a comprehensive Middle East peace will be high on his list. Not because he does not want to go down as the US president to have secured that elusive goal, but rather because of a realization that this is beyond his grasp. That, at least, will have to be Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s wish when he... [Lire la suite]

After Obama victory, Iran says US shouldn't expect talks

Iran reacted coolly to Barack Obama's re-election on Wednesday, as the head of its judiciary condemned the "crimes" of US sanctions and indicated the president should not expect rapid new negotiations with Tehran. "After all this pressure and crimes against the people of Iran, relations with America cannot be possible overnight and Americans should not think they can hold our nation to ransom by coming to the negotiating table," Sadeq Larijani was quoted as saying by...
