Anti-Syrian parliamentarian and at least six other people were killed
A Lebanese anti-Syrian parliamentarian and at least six other people were killed Wednesday when a car bomb exploded in a Christian suburb of the capital Beirut. Another 20 people were wounded. Antoine Ghanem was a Christian Maronite and a member of Lebanon's Phalange Party, which is known to take an anti-Syrian stance. Three months ago, anti-Syrian Parliament member Walid Eido was killed along with nine others -- including his son and two bodyguards -- in a huge explosion in western Beirut. The explosion took place before Lebanon's parliament is supposed to convene to elect a new president next week. Lebanon has been going through its worst political crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war. Syria has denied any involvement in the killings. (19,59)
