Ambassador to Ankara: low level talks with Syria could go higher
Israel's ambassador in Ankara, Gaby Levi, raised the possibility Sunday of renewing peace negotiations with Syria under Turkish mediation. Levi told Kol Yisrael, "The first step could be handled through low-level officials and if it works and if there are results, one can expect it will continue at a much higher level." He added that he could not, however, "give any details of the process." The remarks came a day after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogen held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad amid renewed efforts by his government to broker and relaunch peace negotiations between Syria and Israel which have been frozen since 2000.(00.07)
