Hebron

Two Kiryat Arba residents, suspected of shooting at Palestinians following the forced eviction of settlers from the "House of Contention" in Hebron on Thursday, turned themselves in to the authorities on Saturday. The two have been transferred to the custody of the Hebron District police for questioning after they were seen apparently shooting at Palestinians at close range in a film shot by the Isareli human rights group B'Tselem. As the evacuation proceeded, some settlers in Hebron and the surrounding area adopted a "price tag" policy, whereby every time they are evacuated from an illegal outpost, they exact "a price" by targeting the local Palestinian population. They proceeded to rampage through the West Bank vandalize Palestinian property and pelt homes with rocks. Reports of Palestinians firing at settlers also emerged following the evacuation, and one such incident was also documented by B'Tselem. About 35 settlers and soldiers were hurt in the evacuation of the building. Rescue workers and Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital said one settler was moderately wounded, and the others were lightly injured. The operation came about three weeks after the High Court had ordered the state to evacuate the building immediately. Palestinian hospital officials said 17 Palestinians were wounded, including five from bullets. Dozens of masked settlers surrounded the home of a Palestinian family in the city, setting its laundry ablaze and throwing stones at it. Haaretz correspondent Avi Issacharoff, who was inside the house at the time, was hit by a stone hurled by the group outside. Police used stun grenades and tear gas in a bid to subdue the rioting settlers. (23,58)
