Jerusalem police set on foiling PA ceremony in east of capital
Jerusalem police are being placed on high alert in the east of the city Saturday, and large forces are being deployed to stop the Palestinian Authority from holding a ceremony declaring Jerusalem as the Arab cultural capital this year. Public Security Minister Avi Dichter has instructed the police to be tough in its response to any attempt by the Palestinian Authority to go ahead with the plan for a series of cultural events in Jerusalem and Nazareth. The Palestinian news agency, Maan, reports that the celebration is scheduled to begin in east Jerusalem this afternoon, and the declaration of Jerusalem as the Arab cultural capital for 2009 is due to be made at an official ceremony Saturady evening, attended by Palestinian cabinet ministers, diplomats and spiritual leaders from the Arab world. In Nazareth, a ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Darwish cultural center Saturday evening. (09,32)
