Calm restored in Jerusalem after violent clashes
Calm has been restored to Jerusalem as the Jewish festival of Succot began Wednesday evening following riots in Silwan earlier in the day. A police spokesman said violent clashes broke out when residents of Silwan threw rocks at the car of an Israeli security guard early Wednesday morning, and the guard responded by opening fire, killing a 32-year-old Palestinian man and wounding two others. The dead man was idenitified as Samir Serhan, who had been detained in the past for participating in unrest. Several other Palestinians were later wounded as police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse stone-throwers. Ten Israelis were also injured, including three policemen, as the clashes spread to the Old City, and riot police entered the Temple Mount mosque compound to stop Palestinians throwing rocks at the Western Wall below. Others went on the rampage during Serhan's funeral, smashing windows on buses and setting tires on fire. Eight Palestinains were arrested.
Elsewhere, a 35-year-old Israeli man was stabbed by a Palestinian near Mount Scopus, and hospitalized with wounds described as moderate. (19,00)
