Netanyahu: Israel not obliged by international agreement with Iran

The United States has said that world powers would consider relaxing some economic sanctions against Iran if Tehran takes verifiable steps to limit its nuclear program. But if the byword of the international community is "verifiable," for Israel, the key word is "capability," to rid Iran of already attained capability. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the deal buries "the possibility of having a peaceful resolution" to the nuclear dispute. Speaking to reporters, Netanyahu said: "I understand the Iranians are walking around very... [Lire la suite]

US could offer Iran some sanctions relief for halting enrichment activity

Nuclear talks resume in Geneva on Thursday between Iran and six world powers. Ahead of the latest round of discussions, a senior US official said Washington is willing to offer Iran limited -- and reversible -- sanctions relief if Tehran agrees to take a "first step" to stop advancing its nuclear program. The official said this would be a first step to stop the program from moving forward, and potentially roll it back. The source stressed that any sanctions relief would not touch the core... Israel dismissive of Swiss report on cause of Arafat's death

Israel was dismissive of conclusions of Swiss scientists supporting the theory that Yasser Arafat was killed by poisoning from the radioactive substance polonium. Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor called the Swiss results "inconclusive, at best," adding that even Arafat's widow Suha "understands that the evidence is so scant she cannot point the finger at anybody." He termed the various reports on the circumstances of Arafat's death a "soap opera" and stressed that Israel has no... [Lire la suite]

Hagel: Sanctions, Israeli pressure brought Iran to table

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel believes it was the harsh sanctions leveled against Iran combined with Israeli pressure which led Tehran to the negotiation table with the West. In an interview for Bloomberg's Jefery Goldberg, Hagel said that "Iran is responding to the constant pressure from Israel." Regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hagel said that "he is legitimately concerned, as any prime minister of Israel has been, about the future security needs of their country.” Hagel's statements were issued a week after US State... Syrian mother gives birth in Ziv Medical Center

A Syrian woman gave birth to her firstborn in the Ziv Medical Center in Safed on Sunday. The mother was evacuated to the Israeli hospital overnight and delivered a baby boy on Sunday morning. "There are no midwives in the village and there was no one to help with the delivery," the Syrian mother, who resides in the Quneitra region, said. As a result, she asked IDF troops stationed near the border fence to help her. The woman is a nurse, and noted she had knowledge of hundreds of Syrian refugees who were given medical care in Israeli... [Lire la suite]

DM Ya'alon: Hamas preparing for next round of violence

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon on Sunday visited the five IDF soldiers who were injured in Thursday's Gaza border incident. "We are concerned about the tunnel phenomenon," he said upon leaving the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. "Hamas sees it as a way to lay infrastructure for terror attacks. We consider Hamas, which is engaged in digging and controls Gaza, as responsible. Calm will be met with calm." He further added, "Any provocation will be met by a tough response on our part. There is no connection between what is going on in... [Lire la suite]

New York Times: NSA spied on Israeli military targets

The National Security Agency spied on "high priority Israeli military targets," a New York Times report says. Based on documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the report shows how the agency shares information with governments that are themselves important NSA targets, "notably Israel." The Snowden documents describe collaboration with Israel's Sigint National Unit, Unit 8200, which gets raw NSA eavesdropping material and provides it in return. But they also mention the agency’s tracking of “high priority Israeli... [Lire la suite]

An Obama administration official confirmed to CNN Thursday night that Israeli warplanes struck a military base near the Syrian city of Latakia. The target, according to the Obama administration official, was missiles and related equipment the Israelis felt might be transferred to Hezbollah. Second group of Palestinian released

The second stage of the Palestinian release is underway, as 26 prisoners left Israeli prisons Tuesday night, as part of an Israeli gesture to the Palestinian Authority in light of the resumption of peace talks. The prisoners who arrived in Ramallah were welcomed by some 2,000 people, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who vowed to continue his efforts to ensure that all prisoners are released, and that he will not sign any agreement with Israel until all prisoners are released.
